about me
I was a marxist leninist trotskyist stranded in Austin, TX until I got called up to go fight in Iraq. My political thinking is based on socialist theory and I try to stay aware of and involved in political activism. But here's the first bit of irony and crisis: in and attempt to avoid hunger and homelessness I joind the Texas Army National Guard as a combat medic. And the timing was great( 3 weeks before the 9-11 terrorist incident ). My unit was called up. So I had to find a way to avoid participating in the murderous slaughter in Iraq. Crisis #2 is my love life or lack of one. In addition to being on the extreme far left I'm also polyamorous which means I believe in having multiple relationships. Since most people claim to put monogamy on the high ground of morality I'm not too popular. But I have to be true to myself. Crisis #3 is my total alienation from corporate healthcare. So much so that I'd like to find another occupation. But I've decided to hang in there a little longer. I'm also thinking of becoming a teacher. I'm originally from New Orleans, LA but left in 1982 when I joined the military.

Texas Civil Rights Project discusses "Privacy v. Security" (events » politics & activism) Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 6:00 PM Texas Civil Rights Project discusses "Privacy v. Security"

The Texas Maverick, an independent monthly student publication at The University of Texas at Austin, is hosting an event. If you'd like, please pass this message along on your respective listservs.

James C. Harrington, UT School of Law professor and the director of the Texas Civil Rights Project, will be presenting his argument against giving up privacy and liberty for security. His comments come at an interesting time, especially as Donald Kerr, Deputy Director of National Intelligence, recently held a conference stating that Americans need to change the way we view privacy; Kerr held that anonymity is not an option anymore in the War on Terror.

Austin Music Mixer Strikes Again (events » community) Tuesday, January 15, 2008 - 6:30 PM Austin Music Mixer Strikes Again

We're moving to the east side!

If you're an Austin Music Mixer regular, then you remember our last big party back in October. It's finally time for a new year of Mixers kicking off at a cool new location on the east side.

Tuesday, January 15

Rio Rita Cafe y Cantina
1308 E. 6th at Navasota

Rio Rita is a cool, funky cafe that's part of the emerging scene on the east side of Austin. It's owned by the same folks who own Beerland, so Rita has deep Austin roots with a fresh, quirky appeal. It's already developed a devoted following thanks to its special music, arts, and games-themed evenings. Be sure to hang out after the Mixer for the Old Timey Music Circle with longtime Austin punkster Tim Kerr!

Many thanks to Rio Rita for hosting Austin Music Mixer this quarter!

Everyone knows that relationship- building is important in creating business opportunities- -especially in the music industry.

Austin Music Mixer meets twice a month and provides a friendly place for musicians and industry pros (or wannabes) to make contacts, share experiences, and learn from each other. So whether you're a longtime Austinite or green on the scene, Austin Music Mixer is valuable for artists at any stage in their careers.

Echoes of Color Film Series screens in East Austin (events » politics & activism) Thursday, January 17, 2008 - 6:00 AM JANUARY 17 | ECHOES OF COLOR FILM SERIES SCREENING EVERY MOTHER'S SON

Echoes of Color Film Series, a collaboration with KLRU
PBS Austin, Austin Area Heritage Council and George
Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center, will
feature a screening of the film "Every Mother's Son"
from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the George Washington
Carver Museum & Cultural Center (1165 Angelina
Street).

In the late 1990s, three victims of police brutality
made headlines around the country. "Every Mother's
Son" tells of the victims' three mothers who came
together to demand justice and accountability.

In fall 2006, KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, launched a free
three-part film series called Echoes of Color to
provide a forum on issues of particular concern to the
African American community. Participants watch films
together and then examine issues, engage in dialogue
with others who share these concerns, and explore
opportunities for hands-on problem solving through
“neighboring” and volunteer activities.

Each year KLRU conducts six to ten community
engagement projects similar to Echoes of Color. As one
of the largest non-profit organizations in Central
Texas, KLRU forms long-term partnerships to bring
diverse people and interests together to build a
stronger community. The station’s community engagement
efforts range from advance screenings of local and
national programs with post-viewing discussion groups
to creating a diabetes awareness campaign around a
popular PBS program to convening forums on important
community issues to coordinating statewide promotional
efforts for caregiver support.

ALEX GIBNEY, WRITER, PRODUCER DIRECTOR OF THE OSCAR NOMINATED FEATURE

TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE, WILL CONDUCT A Q&A AT THE REGAL ARBOR ON FEBRUARY 15TH.

Sponsored by ThinkFilm and The Regal Arbor

Alex Gibney, writer, producer, director of the Oscar nominated documentary feature TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE, will conduct a Q&A after the 7:30 PM show at the Regal Arbor opening night – February 15.

TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE is stunning inquiry into the suspicious death of an Afghani taxi driver at Bagram air base in 2002, the film is a fastidiously assembled, uncommonly well-researched examination of how an innocent civilian was apprehended, imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately murdered by the greatest democracy on earth. Combining the cool detachment of a forensic expert with the heated indignation of a proud American who holds his country to a high standard, Gibney’s film reveals how the Bush administration has systematically betrayed the very ideals it professes to uphold.

Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan (events » politics & activism) Thursday, March 13, 2008 - 6:00 PM Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan

In March of 2008, Iraq Veterans Against the War will gather in our nation's capital to break the silence and hold our leaders accountable for these wars. We hope you'll join us, because yours is a story that every American needs to hear.

Email: wintersoldier@ivaw.org

Website: www.ivaw.org/wintersoldier

Description:

In 1971, over one hundred members of Vietnam Veterans Against the War gathered in Detroit to share their stories with America. Atrocities like the My Lai massacre had ignited popular opposition to the war, but political and military leaders insisted that such crimes were isolated exceptions. The members of VVAW knew differently.

Over three days in January, these soldiers testified on the systematic brutality they had seen visited upon the people of Vietnam. They called it the Winter Soldier investigation, after Thomas Paine's famous admonishing of the "summer soldier" who shirks his duty during difficult times. In a time of war and lies, the veterans who gathered in Detroit knew it was their duty to tell the truth.

Over thirty years later, we find ourselves faced with a new war. But the lies are the same. Once again, American troops are sinking into increasingly bloody occupations. Once again, war crimes in places like Haditha, Fallujah, and Abu Ghraib have turned the public against the war. Once again, politicians and generals are blaming "a few bad apples" instead of examining the military policies that have destroyed Iraq and Afghanistan.

Once again, our country needs Winter Soldiers.

Evaristo and Tony, indigenous brothers from northwest Mexico, have just graduated from elementary school. They are contemplating their next move, when their grandfather offers them an assignment: to deliver medicine to a remote community. They accept, steal his horse for transport, and set off on their journey. However, the brothers soon lose their way and their horse, and wander desperately into the forest to look for it. Tony and Evaristo embark on separate adventures, as desperation begins to set in; whatever happens, they cannot return without their grandfather’s horse.

Africa’s Brain Gain: Virtual Schools

By Matthew Shaer

www.utne.com/ 2007-11-01/Africas-Brain- Gain.aspx

In dry, dusty Dakar, the computer is more than a token convenience. It is a window to the outside world. Since the turn of the 21st century, local web access has increased at a startling rate, reaching thousands of the city’s residents. Internet cafés filled with chattering businesspeople and students line the wide boulevards. The telecom industry is booming.

But even as... read more

Carl is amazingly active.
He's a constant stream of information.

Watch his posts here and he will soon become a touchstone of your social awareness.
His goal though seems to let us all know that we are just a step away from being just as active as he is.

I'm constantly gaining inspiration from this man.
My finding him online couldn't have come at a better time.

Carl is a true revolutionary! He also makes one hell of a black Castro. If you ever get the chance to hang out with this bad ass take it, you don't meet people this dedicated everyday.

Carl and I go way back, for not ever having met. Before Tribe there was this little beta site called Friendster. I caught up with him at this other crappy beta site Orkut. But it's here on Tribe that I saw this man for what he really is: a king amongst kings. Peace out, Carl! You are DA MAN!
