Discombobulate

The Mutant Audio Outpost is seeking musicians and sound artists interested in performing at Burning Man 08.

Our goal is to fill our camp schedule with live performances by artists who are doing something different musically and are challenging their audience to view music and audio in a new way. Artists that are implementing unusual methodology, instrumentation, or equipment in the creation of their sound and music are encouraged to contact us. We would love to take a listen!

We are open to both electronic and acoustic acts, but please note that we are not scheduling DJs. This is not intended as a slight to the many talented DJs out there. We simply feel that there are enough other camps for them to play at, most of which are far more suited for it - in terms of sound system and camp setup - than we would be.

Interested artists and musicians should send an email to rbaseel / at / gmail / dot / com. Please include the following information:

* Your name, as well as the name you perform under or name of your group, if different from your own. If you have more than one person in your group, please let us know who they are as well.
* A link to your music. It is imperative that we have some idea of what you sound like that goes beyond a text description. Emails containing attachments will be deleted unless specific arrangement has been made with the artist before receiving the attachment.
* Contact information is a big help! If all you want to give is an email address that is perfectly fine, but providing us with a phone number as well can make scheduling much easier.

Goodbye old friend, I'm sorry that we lost touch the last two years. You were a big influence on my life.

Over the weekend I watched the documentary, "American Hardcore". While the film itself was lacking in a few areas, the subject matter is something I care about quite a bit. I turned my back on hardcore and punk about 17 years ago.

While I thought it was just that I grew to need music and sound with more substance, this docu made me realize that my explorations into experimental, psychadelic and noise were really just extensions of that old hardcore anti-music aesthetic. While reflecting on the 80's hardcore movement, I also came to realize that my interest in burning also came about from that deep-rooted hardcore mentality. On the surface there are a lot of differences, obviously, but ideas such as self-sufficiency, non-commerce/barter economies, do-acracy , radical self-expression and collaboration all have roots in that hardcore ethos (DIY and anarchism).

Just rambling thoughts...

So, my campmates in Bean Bang Boom came over Sunday and we setup our base structures for our theme camp for Flipside 07. We left it up to do some work on the look of the camp. We got home last night to find them tossed into oak trees - pieces missing and quite a few parts of it bent. The tarp portion of it is fine but ... back to square one if we can't repair these.

The fun has begun!
