and also sometimes writes things down

A couple months ago, my Tribe.net account disappeared. It was sad. All the tribes I moderated said, "pick a new moderator," and my posts were listed as "unsubscribed."

I could have signed back up, but starting from scratch seemed like a lot of work. As an experiment, when I moved here from Friendster, I promised myself I'd never send a friend request. I still haven't, and I'm friends with 173 people. I have a blog, and photos, and a couple thousand posts in all sorts of tribes. It's ... read more

Hi. I have a problem.

I have a good friend named Jacob Appelbaum. He is a regular flickr user (flickr.com/photos/ioerror), and also a rather talented and accomplished artist. He's one of the most productive photographers in the world today using non-visible light processes. His photos have been featured in books and newspapers, and his work shows from time to time in the Bay Area. He was recently the artist in residence with a government-funded group called Monochrom in Vienna, Austri... read more

Are you an electrical engineer? Want to explain to me how I can make the power supply for these things not suck ass? I'm thinking a bunch of little electrolytic capacitors might be the soluti... read more

My mind wanders. It's a part of me that I have come to accept, and even to appreciate. I don't think about it much, except when I'm trying to code, or have a coherent conversation, or read a book. Then it can be a little annoying. But whatever -- I've spent years coming up with ways to deal with this, and for the most part they work.

What I didn't pay much attention to in the past was where my mind would tend to wander. Just now, I was reading Jonathan's recent blog entry about how A... read more

My bond with Ian fell somewhere in-between friendship and competition. Competition for her love, competition for her. Not that I respected him for earning her love- snails and trees and twigs and oddly-shaped furniture could do that. But I learned early on that among those who choose, she is one with wisdom. She embodies it. She holds it in her hand and makes artwork out of it. Or rather, it becomes artwork for her, because it is so fun to please her. Because it feels like enough, no matter what else.

But it's a bond, that's for sure. We look at one another and we know something about each other- we share something. We are both in love. In love, in awe, in spirit with this child of incredible lightness.

"What is 'grounded'" I ask, "what does it mean?" And the analogies start to pour in, fettered with descriptive phrases, "like metal" "like that connection to the ground" "someone that makes you feel centered" "feel calm in times of restlessness" "that bring you more in touch w/yourself" "more capable of finding yourself, finding your center..." The ideas kept pouring in, refusing to construct themselves into some collective whole.

"You do NOT make me feel grounded, Lisa" he said, giggling but sincere, figgeting with something in his hands. No one ever said that to me before, that I did not make them feel grounded- that I had the opposite effect.

That's why I respect Ian, that's why he sticks out in my mind. Because him and I have something in common:

I make us feel unsettled.

toasted salmon
puppet blood
these are the things of real boys
pump me full of dolphins
and take me to your leader
give him berries and ripe cheese
let him smile his teeth dry
across drool lathered lips
asks no questions
watch for answers
doubt is as much your creation
as a reality
but if need should sweel within you
if there should be some craving
for something . . . .
more
close your eye-lids and roll your eyes around backwards
so that you are looking into your head
look closely
see that small creature dancing around back there
laughing
yes, yes,
that is Ian
that is Ian

Just a quick side note: Two years ago at a beach just south an the Peruvian boarder, Ian and I sat eating tree bark and watching the moon. we sucked on sugar-cane rum and discussed the shade stucture we had built some few hours before. Ian doubted the method for seeking clarity that I have clearly discribed above, and he expressed this by telling me, "You smell of acorns and non-sense. Hold your bladder! I am tinkerbell, damn that Julia Roberts!" At once I sat him down and split the top of my head wide open. There below the gooey bone flecks, he peered his blood splattered eyes and saw the creature dancing.
